COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Wouter Favoreel · Traffic Technology International · 2003

Developments in CCTV technology and automatic incident detection are discussed. In the early 1990s, the capabilities of video detection were limited to simple applications such as counting vehicles, speed measurement and detecting stopped vehicles in tunnels. This was due to the lack of processing power and limited video detection algorithms. Detection performance has improved and the number of applications has increased. Video detection originally needed fixed cameras, but recent advances have made it possible to use PTZ cameras. The positioning mechanism of PTZ cameras has become more accurate. There are trends from analogue to digital cameras and from centralised to decentralised detector intelligence over CCTV networks. New developments include automatic number plate recognition with PTZ cameras, tracking vehicles from one camera to another, and the automatic set up of video detectors. The potential for CMOS cameras is considered.
