Fountain Codes and Network Coding for WSNs

Anya Apavatjrut, Claire Goursaud, Katia Jaffrès‐Runser, Jean-Marie Gorce · 2012

This chapter shows that it is possible to use fountain codes and network coding to overcome two issues namely energy stress and transmission reliability. Fountain codes are rateless codes, naming with no predefined rate. They adapt themselves automatically to any channel by sending an infinite flow of coded packets from the source. The chapter presents a few general concepts on coded data transmission such as Random fountain codes, Luby transform and Raptor code. Fountain codes for a wireless sensor network (WSN) considerably decrease the number of acknowledgments and they intrinsically adapt to losses in the network. The chapter provides network coding as a major advantage for sensor networks in light. Controlled Vocabulary Terms network coding; wireless LAN; Wireless sensor networks
