IP‐Based Tactical Waveforms and the GIG
George F. Elmasry · 2012
The joint tactical radio system (JTRS) program continues to play a major role in making internet protocol (IP)-based tactical radios a reality within all department of defense (DoD) networks. This chapter briefly covers the two waveforms, namely high-band networking waveform (HNW) and network centric waveform (NCW). It focuses on the challenging mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) problems such as cross layer signaling, physical layer resource allocations, and topology control and on how they are addressed by the JTRS program. In addition to the HNW and NCW capabilities, the tactical global information grid (GIG) can utilize point-to-point cables, point-to-point high capacity microwave links, and commercial satellite links to create a rich topology and high capacity links, when possible. Satellite delay, in the tactical GIG, is a primary challenge that applications and transport layer protocol developers face.
