Functionals for free boundaries and discontinuous trial functions in diffusion theory

New functionals of first and second order are discussed admitting free boundaries and discontinuous trial functions. This gives a greater flexibility and therefore a better approximation. The adaptation of the functionals is performed by divergence terms and surface integrals. (GE)
