Automatic query expansion methods for English text retrieval have been studied for a long time, with debatable success in many instances. In this paper, we study what the retrieval effectiveness will be achieved when we apply a successful automatic query expansion method for English text retrieval to Japanese text retrieval. Our experiments show that the automatic query expansion method also results in a notable improvement in Japanese text retrieval. 1 Introduction Authors and searchers use a great variety of words to refer to the same thing, this is why expanding or modifying the users' queries can led to considerable improvement in retrieval results.
