The DLL and Information Theory in Tactical Networks

George F. Elmasry · 2012

Information theory quantifies three basic concepts: the source information, the capacity of the channel to carry this information, and the coding (message representation) utilized in the channel. This chapter discusses the different error detection and error correction approaches in tactical networks so that one can form a well-rounded picture of what information transmission means in tactical wireless communications and networking. When selecting a channel coding for a specific channel, one needs to consider factors such as the channel characteristics and the error detection and correction capabilities of the code. Linear block codes are based on the use of a generation matrices and parity-check matrices. In tactical networks, if convolutional codes or turbo codes are used at the data link layer (DLL) of the radio, erasure can occur and cause the loss of an entire IP packet. Controlled Vocabulary Terms block codes; channel capacity; channel coding; error correction; error detection codes; information theory; military communication; open systems
