Security for Network Coding

Marine Minier, Yuanyuan Zhang, Wassim Znaïdi · 2012

This chapter presents security solutions designed to ward off attacks specific to network coding. It gives a taxonomy of attacks that exist against network coding by using a classification based on the power of the attacker, the nature of the attack and the place of the attacker in the network. From this threat model, confidentiality and authenticity are tackled. It provides the conditions that must fulfill the confidentiality mechanisms if one wants to use them for network coding. These schemes are illustrated with the help of practical examples. The chapter formalizes and gives examples of integrity and authenticity solutions dedicated to network coding. These solutions enable one to protect ourselves against a very dangerous attack and one which is in particular energy consuming: pollution attack. Network coding has opened new particularly interesting cryptographic ways that essentially consist of defining new homomorphic primitives to warrant confidentiality and integrity/authenticity. Controlled Vocabulary Terms communication system security; network coding
