Network Management Challenges in Tactical Networks
George F. Elmasry · 2012
This chapter addresses some scenarios where unconventional network management (NM) techniques must be considered in order to meet the objectives of the joint mission. It reviews policy based NM (PBNM) and the use of gaming theory concepts in NM. Many industry standards support PBNM, which uses policy driven automation to manage complex enterprise and service provider networks. The chapter presents some of the urgent challenges facing NM interoperability across the global information grid (GIG). The NM architecture, across the tactical GIG, needs to play a role in providing the joint forces with proper interoperability. The chapter discusses an architectural approach that relies on gateway nodes (GNs) and abstraction techniques. It also presents a conflict resolution case, showing how different tactical network managers need to interface to each other with techniques that are not considered in commercial networks.
