It is argued that although real-time and concurrent languages have a number of common goals, they also differ in fundamental ways. Some important requirements of real-time programming environments are presented and used to determine the suitability of seven concurrent languages for real-time programming in distributed systems. A ranking of these languages shows that modula 2, edison and pearl are among the best languages for real-time programming; Modula, ADA, concurrent Pascal and DP are also considered. Also, several approaches to the validation of real-time programs are briefly presented, and their relative advantages are discussed. 47 references.
