Systems Engineering and Software Engineering: Cooperative or Competitive?
Richard B. Wray · INCOSE International Symposium · 1993
ABSTRACT Even though Systems Engineering (SE) and Software Engineering (SWE) have a common interest in building new software‐intensive systems, there often appear to be difficulties existing between them in achieving this common interest. In future systems developments, these difficulties are not acceptable due to the changing government development environment for large systems acquisitions and increasing software content. There are many common engineering approaches which should encourage these two disciplines to cooperate in advancing their common interests. However, cooperation means they must jointly change the way they currently do business to reduce their difficulties in working together. The difficulties between SE and SWE, differences in viewpoints, their common interests, and recommendations for improvements to their difficulties are identified.
