On the construction of geometrically uniform codes with L×MPSK constellations

For L/spl ges/2, M/spl ges/8, and transmission rate R=(log/sub 2/M-1) bit/sym, a method for constructing geometrically uniform (GU) trellis codes with L/spl times/MPSK constellations is proposed and it is shown that the maximally achievable free distance is twice as large as was previously reported for GU codes with L/spl times/MPSK constellations.
