This paper was written in May 2000 in preparation of the Dutch -Flemish research project Syntactic Atlas of the Dutch Dialects (SAND).The goal of this project is to take stock of and analyze current syntactic microvariation in the varieties of Dutch spoken in Flanders and the Netherlands, in four empirical domains: (i) The left periphery of the clause; (ii) The right periphery of the clause; (iii) Negation and Quantification, and (iv)Pronominal reference. The project will both yield a traditional atlas that represents the geographic distribution of microsyntactic variables and it will yield an electronic database that makes it possible to investigate the correlations between microsyntactic variables. The latter investigation will contribute to the theory of language system internal sources and limits of syntactic variation.
