Chapter 2 provides an overview of the concepts of protocols and signalling. The different types of signalling are discussed, and the chapter introduces access signalling and Signalling System number 7 (SS7). The link layer (signalling ATM adaptation layer at the User-Network Interface (UNI) and the Network Node Interface (NNI)) services and primitives are described, with the principles of the SS7 broadband message transfer part 3 (MTP-3B).
