Protocols and Mechanisms for MBMS

Robert Rümmler, Alexander Gluhak, A.H. Aghvami · 2009

Chapter 6 describes the MBMS standard in detail. Besides the introduction of multicast and broadcast bearer capabilities, MBMS introduces a complete service architecture together with a framework for the provision of MBMS services. First, details of the MBMS multicast and broadcast bearer services are presented. This includes basic concepts such as the associated bearer contexts and the supported QoS as well as management mechanisms of the MBMS bearer plane. Next, routing along the bearer path is described, exploring the different steps involved in routing packets towards the group of receivers. Also, the protocols and mechanisms used for the different delivery methods and support services are presented
