i YO quiero Java!: teaching Java as a second programming language

Sharon M. Tuttle · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2001

This paper presents one approach to teaching Java as a second programming language. Although multitudes of textbooks using Java exist, many of these are introduction to programming texts that use Java as the example language; they assume that the reader is learning to program for the first time. Their orientation and emphasis cause them to offer little help to the instructor designing a course in Java for students who have already been introduced to programming using another language. General Java references are often not student-friendly enough to be of sufficient help, either, in a course for students who are new to Java but not to the basics of programming. The ideas presented here could help other instructors in this situation by giving them a starting list of topics to consider including that is more appropriate than those immediately apparent when perusing the typical intro-to-programming-using-Java text.
