Abstract : Methods were investigated for predicting optimal mean square estimation error in nonlinear estimation problems associated with passive acoustic tracking. The objective was to develop performance prediction methods that are computationally efficient, applicable to realistic passive tracking models, and accurate. Previous work extended Cramer-Rao methods to obtain a method that was computationally efficient and applicable to a large class of realistic mathematical models. The present work reported here applied this method to study the effect of an uncertain, unstable source frequency and the effect of a broadband source signal on passive tracking using omnidirectional and directional sonobuoys. In addition, the report describes work on developing performance prediction methods that are more accurate than Cramer-Rao methods in low signal-to-noise ratio cases. The method used is based on rate distortion theory.
