. A robust natural langage interface must handle incomplete utterances normally used by humans. These discourse phenomena are very common in task-oriented manmachine and question-answering dialogues. In this paper, I present the principles needed to adapt a LTAG grammar for complete written texts to oral and incomplete utterances. The resulting grammar can detect and predict possible ellipsis which manifest themselves as syntactically incomplete LTAG structures. 1 INTRODUCTION Incomplete utterances are common in communication between humains. Empirical studies [5] show that users of natural language system can avoid complex syntax but find it difficult to employ complete expressions instead of fragmentary utterances.
