Spatio-Temporal Processing for Wireless Communications

D. Asztély, Mats Bengtsson, Martin Kristensson, Björn Ottersten · 1998

The use of base station antenna arrays in a wireless network can allow a more efficient use of the spatial dimension. Multiple antennas can provide processing and diversity gain to increase the base station range and improve coverage. Co-channel interference can be rejected spatially or by joint spatial and temporal processing of the multi channel signals. In addition, it is possible to employ spatially selective transmission, reducing co-channel interference on the forward link. This allows an increase in the capacity of the system. A wide range of wireless communication systems may benefit from spatial processing including high mobility cellular systems, low mobility short range systems, wireless local loop applications, satellite communications and wireless LAN. Herein, we discuss two channel modeling approaches. One quite general model which is useful for low mobility TDD systems and is well suited for joint spatio-temporal processing. An alternative channel model described by phys...
