Chapter One introduces the need for software support in the design and implementation of the rapidly expanding communications industry and argues that software agents offer the best chance to address the problems encountered therein. The issues surrounding agent design are covered including agent architectures, toolkits and communication languages. Standards for creating interoperable agent environments are discussed, in particular the FIPA agent platform.
