It is the thesis of this dissertation that high quality, non-dedicated software organizations are achievable for small and medium sized computers. This thesis is supported by the description of a software organization (ALECS) which combines a PL/I based programming language, a modular structured compiler for this programming language, and an attendant operating system to support multiprogramming, real time, and interactive facilities which are normally found only in much larger computing systems.
