FINDING ALTERNATIVES TO THE BEST PATH

Kinnon Scott, David H. Bernstein · 1997

An essential part of many Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Advanced Traffic Management Systems is the path generator. Many existing systems only offer travelers/operators a single alternative -- the "best" path. However, in many situations it is necessary to provide travelers/operators with several alternative paths. In this paper we consider an efficient method for finding such paths and present some initial numerical results that demonstrate the technique's effectiveness. Keywords: ITS, Shortest Paths, Route Guidance, ATIS, ATMS A great number of algorithms have been developed for finding the "best" path through a network, where "best" can be defined in terms of time, cost, distance, or some combination of the three [see (1) for a recent review and evaluation]. Not surprisingly, many of these algorithms have been and are now being used in Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) [see, for example, (2) and (3)]. While thes...
