Abstract Local Area Networks (LANs) are data communications networks within offices, homes, or areas as large as campuses. LANs are based on physical technologies ranging from copper wiring and optical fiber to radio systems. There are a number of commonly used and emerging LAN technologies that offer the opportunity to connect computers and all manner of devices such as sensors and instruments to increasingly pervasive networks.
