Automatic modulation recognition is an intermediate operation between signal detection and demodulation in both cooperative and non-cooperative signal processing applications such as software defined radio(SDR),cognitive radio(CR),radar or communication electronic surveillance etc. In radar electronic surveillances, intrapulse modulation recognition is a very important task in that determining the character of the intrapulse modulation will give valuable insight into the radar’s function and design. The intrapulse modulation information is also one of the key parameters in pulse descriptor word (PDW) used in radar emitter recognition. In the present project a novel recognition algorithm which exploits the linear regression characteristics of time-frequency curve(TFC) based on instantaneous frequency estimation(IFE) by short time fourier transform(STFT) and maximum likelihood method ,to distinguish the common intrapusle modulation signals such as the different Frequency(e.g. FMCW, Chirp etc.) and phase modulations (Barker, Polyphase codes etc.,) and will be implemented. The project involves literature survey of various intra pulse modulations used in the radars, development of the algorithm, signal recognition approach, automatic analysis of intrapulse modulation characteristics of the signal. Later, the algorithm will be implemented in MATLAB and is verified with different real time signal data for its effectiveness. The simulation is followed by the development of the above algorithm in the DLRL custom hardware. The project concludes with verification of the algorithm with real time data for different intra pulse radar signal conditions.
