"Rouse" for trombone, trombonist and electronics

NJ Farwell · Bristol Research (University of Bristol) · 2004

(Programme note) Rouse is about the body and the question: just who or what is the trombonist? In five linked sections - Dream, Deep Sleep, Half World, Snooze, Rouse - the piece follows an imagined process of "waking up". In oscillations and lapses, it moves from the disembodied and virtual to the physical and acoustic. The core material consists of pulses, flows and interference set against things that are more obviously brassy. The title comes from the bugle call: a signal to wake up and a call back to life. Rouse was written for and is dedicated to Hilary Jeffery.
