Conditions are obtained for the realization of the best approximation to a desired time domain input-output relation by means of a distributed network of a given class.Practical constraints are considered in obtaining the optimal (one-dimensional) spatial dependenc for a series R-L, shunt G-C distributed network. The general results are specialized to L-C and R-C lines.
