Asynchronous and synchronous transport experiment

The authors describe a technique for mixing asynchronous and synchronous data streams on clear channels of any speed. Adaptive packet and circuit switching (APCS) is a hybrid switching format and protocol allowing packet and circuit switching between communication nodes in a private network. This technique is compatible with an integrated services digital network (ISDN) but also provides instantaneous allocation between the asynchronous and synchronous channels. Using this concept, function placement in VLSI hardware and code is implemented for an integrated private network. This APCS concept design and prototyping work is a vehicle for understanding and developing the functions of bandwidth management and the layering of these functions in VLSI, microcode, and code. The VLSI implementation provides automatic and instantaneous bandwidth reallocation inside a complex frame.>
