Part 5 (chapters 27-40) describes the activities associated with planning, designing, operating, monitoring and managing networks. Chapter 27: The TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) model describes the basic operating and management functions which a network operator has to conduct and the standard interfaces to be used between network components and network management systems. Key elements of the TMN concept are the management model, the Q3-interface and the CMIP (common management information protocol). This chapter describes them all, and thereby provides an excellent insight into the problems of managing complex networks.
