Instrumentation Amplifiers and Parameter Errors

Patrick H. Garrett · 2002

This chapter is concerned with devices and circuits which comprise the electronic amplifiers of linear systems utilized in instrumentation applications. An instrumentation amplifier is typically the first electronic function in a signal acquisition system, and is largely responsible for the ultimate data accuracy attainable. Contemporary instrumentation amplifiers are shown to possess sufficient linearity, CMRR, low noise, and stability for errors in the microvolt range. Five categories of amplifier applications are described, with representative commercial devices and parameters, whose comparison is enabled by means of analytical error budgets.
