Designing and Operating Microwave Systems

George Kizer · 2013

Digital transmission is usually accomplished by cable or wireless methods. For long-distance transmission, fiber optics and microwave radios are the typical choices. There are many ways to design microwave networks—nearly as many as there are designers. Low frequency radio paths have been designed for decades. Sometimes high frequency networks are a few links connecting a business campus. More commonly, today these systems comprise of hundreds of sites covering an entire city and providing backhaul for new data services. The primary goal of network management is to support telecommunications services by maintaining efficient, reliable operation both when the network is under stress because of overload or failure and when it is changed by the introduction of new equipment and services. Performance monitoring is a powerful tool for service introduction and verification.
