In this chapter, we discuss, in general, various existing approaches to the views of a system and, in particular, in software architectures, while stressing the key indispensable concepts for taking these views, and the different levels of hierarchy carried by these views, into account. The recommended solution for an architectural description (AD) is to partition it into a number of separate and interdependent points of views. A literature review is made on the different approaches based on the viewpoints and the views arising from four fields related to software engineering, namely: requirements specifications, system modeling, system implementation and software architectures. Finally the chapter introduces an approach called Model, View and Abstraction Level based software architecture (MoVAL), which offers a description of a software architecture based on the concepts of views, points of views and levels of hierarchy.
