Scheduling with Distributed Base Stations

Elias E. Yaacoub, Zaher Dawy · 2012

This chapter represents an intermediate step between centralized and distributed scheduling. In fact, in the distributed scheduling scenarios, users should be in a relatively close proximity in order to exchange information or to “hear” the transmissions of other users. Thus, users in the distributed scheduling should be within a reduced coverage area. Distributed base stations (DBSs) solve this problem, by dividing the coverage of a single cell into smaller coverage areas, with each area served by a remote radio head (RRH) connected to a central BS in the cell. Consequently, the distributed scheduling could take place within the coverage area of a single RRH. The chapter presents and discusses simulation results of the scheduling. It also presents the discussion about the use of relays and femtocells instead of the DBSs. Controlled Vocabulary Terms base stations; femtocell networks; relays; scheduling
