DEVELOPMENT OF TOYOTA ATIS IN-VEHICLE EQUIPMENT IN VICS DEMONSTRATION TEST

Akihiko NOJIMA, Hiroshi Morita, Hiroshi Kondo, Norio Komoda · Moving Toward Deployment. Proceedings of the IVHS America Annual Meeting. 2 VolumesIVHS America · 1994

The Vehicle Information & Communication System (VICS) consists of an infrastructure system to edit and supply traffic information and in-vehicle equipment to receive and display the information to the drivers. VICS traffic information includes traffic congestion, restrictions, incidents, etc., and is provided by FM multiplex broadcasting and beacons. This paper explains the infrastructure systems of VICS and outlines information services. It describes the design concept of the three types of in-vehicle VICS systems developed by Toyota. It then introduces the design concept of each in-vehicle unit, characteristics, and equipment configuration, and some evaluation results. Finally, the paper concludes with some remarks on the future development of in-vehicle equipment toward its practical use.
