Design and Structure

Neale Blackwood · 2014

Structure and flexibility may seem to be at cross-purposes, but in reality, structure can lead to flexibility when used correctly. Table-based systems and modular sheet design are the techniques used to add structure to reporting files. Table-based systems add flexibility to reporting models. Many of Excel's options work extremely well with table-based systems. Modular design means separating different processes into separate sheets, which then provide structure to the reporting model while still providing flexibility. Creating and using standardized report layouts can simplify and speed up the development process. Using identical layouts for some reports enables you to take advantage of Excel's 3D calculation abilities. A list of general practices to follow as well as those to avoid is included. A list of reporting practices is also included.
