JPEG: Still Image Compression Standard

JPEG is the first international image compression standard for continuous-tone still images – both gray scale and color images. JPEG is the acronym for “Joint Photographic Experts Group”. This image compression standard is a result of collaborative efforts by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In this chapter, we have described the four modes of algorithms of the JPEG standard. We have discussed the lossless mode and the DCT-based “baseline” JPEG algorithm in great detail in this chapter. We have presented results of baseline algorithm of the JPEG standard for image compression.
