Understanding Wormhole Attacks in Pervasive Networks

Isaac Woungang, Sanjay Kumar Dhurandher, Abhishek Gupta · 2011

In order to achieve secure communication in pervasive networks, understanding the likely security attacks on wireless ad hoc and sensor networks is an important task. Such networks suffer from a variety of security attacks and threats such as Denial of Service (DoS), flooding attack, impersonation attack, selfish node misbehaving, routing table overflow attack, wormhole attack, blackhole attack and so forth. Wireless ad hoc and sensor networks are vulnerable because of their basic characteristics, such as having no source of network management, vigorous topology changes, resource restriction, no certification authority or centralized authority, to mention but a few. One of the most severe attacks that can be launched against wireless ad hoc and sensor networks is the Wormhole Attack. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the Wormhole Attack. Controlled Vocabulary Terms computer network security; ubiquitous computing; wireless sensor networks
