T‐MPLS (Transport MPLS)
Mehmet Toy · 2012
The Transport multiprotocol label switched system (T-MPLS) is a connection-oriented carrier-grade packet transport technology. With Operations, Administration, Management, and Performance (OAMP) based on traditional transport concepts, the T-MPLS aimed at achieving full OAM capabilities. The T-MPLS is able to converge any L2 and L3 protocol on a common packet-based networking technology and exploit a common distributed control plane with lambda and/or TDM-based transport layer. Its OPEX and CAPEX are expected to be lower than MPLS. The ITU-T recommendations specify the architectural approach of T-MPLS but are focused on the data plane aspects of T-MPLS. Many other areas require further work in order to develop a fully fledged suite of T-MPLS standards that can be applied to large-scale network deployments. For T-MPLS to succeed, it must ultimately address operator concerns about its interoperability with IP/MPLS, its support for multipoint-to-multipoint connections, its potential alignment with recent OAM standards work for Ethernet.
