Evolution towards a Distributed Intelligent Broadband Network

Thomas Magedanz, I.S. Venieris, Fabrizio Zizza · 2001

With this chapter, the third part of the book commences where the theoretical discussion that preceded is put to practice using on field experiences from a European research project. This chapter describes the evolution of traditional centralized intelligent network architectures into the distributed intelligent broadband network. The latter is characterized by broadband connections (giving rise to more complex, multimedia services), the use of distributed processing technologies to replace TCAP and INAP as the means to convey the information flows between the identified functional entities, and the use of mobile code technologies to implement the service logic part enabling higher reconfigurability and a laxer mapping of functional to physical entities.
