In recent years the residue number system (RNS) has been coupled with advanced digital technologies for real time signal processing applications. Special purpose processors based on the RNS take advantage of its arithmetic parallelism and potential for simple architectures to achieve high data rates. Residue arithmetic has been implemented using integrated memories and custom VLSI circuits; recently, however, conceptual RNS computational units have been proposed using optical waveguide circuits. For this technology, the time delay for the execution of an arithmetic operation is limited not by gate delays but by the propagation time of the optical signal. These initial concepts have been corroborated and quantified by the work presented which includes the detailed practical design of realizable RNS/optical waveguide computational units and the configuration and layout of such computational units into a complete arithmetic unit for a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processor. 6 references.
