Parametric coding (or compression) of audio signals is a promising new technique that has found its way into recent coding standards like MPEG-4, demonstrating its ability to achieve high audio quality at very low bit-rates. While transform coding techniques (like MP3 and AAC) rely on a perception model, parametric coding techniques complement the perception model with a signal model.
