Traditional Interaction Mechanisms
Barry G. Blundell, Adam James Schwarz · 2005
In this chapter, we turn our attention to devices via which we are able to interact with the digital world. We introduce the concept of an interaction space and consider various types of interaction device. Efficiency of interaction is considered within the context of Fitts' Law (which is more appropriately referred to as Fitts' Model within this book). This discussion forms the basis for a review of some of the trials that have subsequently been carried out in connection with the interaction process. We provide an elementary derivation of Fitts' Model and introduce three general interaction paradigms which form an important basis for subsequent discussion. These are: transferred interaction, direct interaction, and pointer-based interaction.
