This chapter focuses on the rationale behind the introduction of Distributed Object/Mobile Agent technologies in an intelligent network architecture. Concrete benefits accruing from their application are examined and the case is made as to how certain general attributes of these technologies (location transparency, code mobility) can be employed in an intelligent network context.
