Sink Mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks

Li Jun Xu, Amiya R. Nayak, Ivan Stojmenović · 2010

Data gathering is a fundamental task of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). It aims to collect sensor readings from sensory fields at predefined sinks (without aggregating at intermediate nodes) for analysis and processing. This chapter focuses on the emerging and promising sink mobility problem. It first investigates the energy hole problem from the theoretical point of view, and then presents a taxonomy of sink mobility approaches for energy-efficient data gathering. The chapter also reviews the literature on energy-efficient data collection by mobile sinks in delay-tolerant WSNs. It examines direct-contact data collection methods and rendezvous-based data collection methods. Controlled Vocabulary Terms delay tolerant networks; hole mobility; wireless sensor networks
