On the Implementation of Digital Controllers

Albert Hinrichs, William L. Brogan · 1983

There are several well known methods for designing digital controllers. There are also several methods for analyzing the effects of coefficient quantization and amplitude quantization. A simulation procedure is presented for determining the required wordlengths for coefficient storage and controller implementation. The IBM continuous system modeling program and a simple model of the two's-complement quantizer are used to simulate and evaluate a system's performance given a particular set of implementation parameters. A simple and straightforward method to estimate the required quantization levels is given.
