TOWARDS A FORMAL MODEL FOR EXTANT TASK KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION
Panos Markopoulos, Stathis Gikas · 2001
. This paper discusses the use of models of extant task knowledge in the design of user interfaces. For the majority of cognitive models it is not clear how they can contribute to design. It is argued that even methods specifically geared to support the prescriptive use of task models such as ADEPT and JSD*, the central question of how the task model should relate to the constructed system is not adequately addressed. The notion of task conformance is at the heart of this problem. This paper presents a scheme for the formal representation of user task knowledge based on TKS in a process algebraic framework. Some methodological problems involved in constructing a formal representation of a cognitive model are raised and an example taken from the domain of air traffic control is briefly presented. The notion of task conformance is discussed within this framework. KEYWORDS . Task Knowledge, Formal Specification, LOTOS, User Interface Design, Task Conformance. 1. INTRODUCTION Research in H...
