The Duke Internet Programming Contest

Introduction Our contest was inspired by and modeled after the ACM scholastic programming contest. Regional ACM competitions take place every fall in most of the ACM regions around the world with finals held in the spring at the ACM Computer Science Conference. We decided that it would be fun to have a contest that did not involve any travel for the teams and would include people not usually allowed to compete in the ACM contest (e.g., faculty). We also wanted to allow an unlimited number of teams to participate. With these goals in mind we "advertised" the contest over one of the many electronic news groups distributed throughout the world (comp.edu). This notice was sent only one week before the contest was scheduled to take place, but local considerations precluded a longer interim.
