Neighbor Discovery: Security Challenges in Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks

Mohammad Sayad, Kamal Mohamedpour · InTech eBooks · 2010

In this chapter, we introduced many of the current threats and solutions for the neighbor discovery problem in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Separating the attacks into internal and external ones, depending on how much the protocols are resistant to each of these attacks, we categorized them into two groups as well. Many of the current solutions focus on the external relay-based attacks while little effort has been made to mitigate the internal attackers' damage. Most of the current solutions for the internal attacks are cryptographic which are either resource consuming or do not support mobility. Numerating all the solutions, we proposed a probabilistic countermeasure for the internal broadcast attacks. It is obvious that combinational attacks require combinational solutions. Our design framework for the internal broadcast attacks can be combined with nearly all the other solutions to provide higher levels of security facing both internal and external attacks.
