View maintenance in relational and deductive databases by incremental query evaluation

Dimitra Vista · Conference of the Centre for Advanced Studies on Collaborative Research · 1994

Database views are considered one of the most important aspects of database technology. In most database systems, views are computed on demand. In others, they can be materialized to facilitate fast access to them. Materialized views are sensitive to database changes and may need to be updated in response to those changes. This paper surveys the area of view maintenance, with emphasis on incremental view maintenance techniques, for both relational and deductive databases. It presents and compares existing strategies, their application domains, their performance, and their ease of implementation.
