A GENERAL KNOWLEDGE-BASED ARCHITECTURE FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL : THE KITS APPROACH

José Cuena, Giorgio Ambrosino, M Boero · International conference on Artificial intelligence and applications · 1992

Describes the work currently carried out in the DRIVE - KITS project aimed at the application and fieldtesting of artificial intelligence (AI) and knowledge-based techniques in the domain of traffic control. KITS ( Knowledge-Based Intelligent Traffic Control Systems) proposes a general knowledge-based architecture for adaptive traffic control applications and provides the test bed for extensive experimentation and evaluation of the KB approach at various sites. The article focuses on the knowledge- structuring aspects of the KB environment introducing a classification of the knowledge underlying traffic understanding and control tasks, identifying a set of primitive conceptual tasks that are typical of the domain and proposing, based on such classification of tasks, a general functional architecture for KB adaptive control systems.
