Placement of Data in Multi-Zone Disk Drives

This paper describes a placement technique for the layout of files across the surface of a multizone magnetic disk drive to maximize its bandwidth. It argues for a file system that monitors the frequency of access to the files and modifies the placement of files in order to respond to an evolving pattern of file accesses. Such a file system is particularly useful for repositories whose primary functionality is to disseminate information, such as the World-Wide-Web along with thousands of ftp sites that render documents, graphic pictures, images, audio clips, and full-motion video available on the Internet. Employing software techniques to enhance the disk performance is important because its mechanical nature has limited its hardware performance improvements at 7 to 10 percent a year.
