Recursive Image Filters and Space Filling Curves

Jacek Nieweglowski, T. George Campbell · 2005

The Recursive Median filter is known for good noise attenuation properties. When applied to images the recursive median filter has undesirable property of seriously reducing the amount of details. The excellent noise reduction proper ties of this filter are due to the fact that it forces the output to be smooth along the image scanning path. In this paper we show that by choosing of the image scanning path which localizes the filter ing process spatially the detail preservation is im proved. A particularly useful scanning path for this kind of application is Peano Curve. The algorithm is characterized by low complexity and results in filters possessing good noise attenuation and detail preservation.
